Heaven Points to Jesus
“Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men. The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring his disciples word. As they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” They came and took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.” (Matthew 28:1-9 WEB)
It is interesting how unbelievers are scared of angels. Just one dazzlingly bright angel was enough to cause a great earthquake, roll away the huge stone from the front of the tomb, and scare the Roman soldiers until they fainted.
It must be the sin consciousness that causes them to be afraid of divine punishment.
On the other hand, the women who came to see Jesus’ body did not faint upon seeing the angel. Their slight fear was only from not knowing who this being was. Being with Jesus made them bold and acquainted with the supernatural.
“For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone.” (Psalms 91:11-12 WEB)
Every day, these mighty angels guard us in all our ways, protecting us from harm. We don’t have to fear men when they will faint upon seeing our heavenly bodyguards.
And of course the passage doesn’t end with an angel because our focus has to be the commander of angel armies.
Jesus appeared and the women took hold of His feet, worshipping Him. They didn’t worship the angel, and the angel’s message was all about Jesus.
Jesus—the one that heaven proclaims. Let’s worship Him, for He is risen and alive forevermore!
